The idea of \u200b\u200bincreasing passenger traffic with a new, larger flying boat came to Claude Dornier, then-owner of Dornier GmbH Metallbauten that bore his name. The new project designed by Dornier would be based on the experience gained from Dornier Do J Wal produced in Switzerland, Altenrhein subsidiary Dornier-Werke AG, and Italy, the Aeronautical Mechanical Engineering Limited Company (CMAS) in Marina di Pisa, circumvent the limitations imposed to Germany by the Treaty of Versailles following the end of the First World War.
